A Brief History
Shuk Shon - Stjuksshon - Tucsón
(At the foot of black mountain)
The site of the Royal Presidio de San Agustín
del Tucsón was established on 20 August 1775 by
Lt. Col. Hugo O'Conor, an Irishman and Knight of
the Order of Calatrava, Colonel of Infantry in his Majesty's Royal Spanish Armies, and Commanding Inspector of the Frontier Posts of New Spain. He
also relocated the Troopers from the Royal Presidio de San Ignacio del Tubac, eithteen leagues south to
this newly established Presidio, laying the foundation
for today's metropolis of Tucsón.

Col. Hugo O'Conor's 1775 Proclamation
Architect Lewis Hall was very conscientious about the city's birthplace, the Royal Presidio de San Agustín del Tucsón.
He lobbied the mayor and city council and others to "build it and they will come".
The city's interest generated the Tucson Origins Manifesto in the 1970's. The TIF proposal in the late 1990's, elected by the people, gave birth to "Rio Nuevo" and re-kindled the Tucson Origins Heritage project to construct the Convento site, including the Chapel and mission gardens, and our own "partial" Presidio de San Agustín del Tucsón.
